FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the time commitment?
The average time needed is 4 hours and that includes all the preparation, cooking. serving, dishes, and cleaning. Groups are welcome to put in more than the 4-hour average depending on what they are making.
Do we have to do the full 4 hours?
NO, we can be flexible with groups. Groups can come in and just the cooking or just the serving. It is completely up to the group and we will do our best to work with your group to find the best fit!
What time do you serve meals?
LUNCH: 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM groups come in around 11:00 AM to start cooking
DINNER: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM, groups come in around 5:00 PM to start cooking
These meal times are open to the public and are accessible to anyone.
What is the availability in the Soup Kitchen?
If you are looking to book a date please visit our Soup Kitchen calendar to see available dates. All available spots are colour coded, lunch is blue and dinner is green Be sure to contact us as soon as possible after you have chosen a date, the calendar automatically updates when we book in a group and we don't want you to miss out on that date!
Can I volunteer as an individual or are groups preferred?
YES, you can volunteer as an individual, as they say, many hands make for light work. If you are volunteering in a group, 6-10 people are ideal and prove to be a good size for working in the kitchen.
Working in groups also serves as a great team-building experience. It is a fantastic way to get together a group of friends and family, coworkers, school groups or service clubs to selflessly help those in need.
Does Shelter House provide all the food to be cooked?
YES, we do provide what is needed to cook a meal. If you have a menu plan that includes an item we do not have, you can purchase that item and donate it for an IN-KIND tax receipt.
We have a large food storage room that holds almost everything you will need; we also provide groups with 20lbs of ground beef. Other items such as salads and vegetables are picked up daily from local grocery stores; there is, however, no guarantee that we will always have exactly what you are looking for.
If I wanted to donate to the Soup Kitchen, what items are needed?
Please check out the Soup Kitchen Wish List for the items that are priority needs and other items that are always useful!
In addition to food items, the soup kitchen is often in need of items to serve. We accept donations of utensils, dinner plates, dessert plates, mugs, and cups. We also are in constant need of containers in order to provide takeout meals for clients.
